Paul Dooley Biography
Paul Dooley was born on February 22, 1928, in the city of Parkersburg, in the state of West Virginia. In a later explanation, he stated that he was dissatisfied with the fact that the place where he grew up lacked a more cultural atmosphere. Paul gorged himself on the comedy shows that were broadcast on the radio every day. His first job after finishing school was working as a cartoonist for the local newspaper, where he also had a comic strip that he wrote and drew himself. After completing his service in the Navy and receiving his discharge in 1952, Dooley enrolled at West Virginia University with the intention of earning a degree in acting.
Dooley uprooted his life and moved to the Big Apple in the pursuit of making it big in the New York theater scene. Dooley began his career on the New York stage in supporting roles; nonetheless, he quickly found constant employment there. Because of the stand-up performances he had performed previously, he was invited to appear on The Tonight Show in 1962. Dooley was seen by famed director Mike Nichols, who at the time was searching for players for his Broadway production of “The Odd Couple.”
