Neil DeGrasse Tyson Biography

 

On October 5, 1958, in New York City, he became one of three children to African-American father Cyril deGrasse Tyson and Puerto Rican mother Sunchita Marie Tyson. His sociologist father founded Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited, while his gerontologist mother specialized in the elderly. Before deciding on the Bronx High School of Science, he tried out a few other public schools in the Big Apple. He was an outstanding wrestler and team leader as a youngster. A bright and inquisitive young man, he was the head editor of the school’s “Physical Science Journal” and had a lifelong interest in the cosmos. In 1976, he finished school.

His fascination with astronomy eventually became an obsession, and he devoted himself to learning as much as possible about it. In 1980, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Harvard University. He was also a good dancer and kept up his love in wrestling throughout college.
