Mohamed ElBaradei Biography
Mohamed El Baradei was born on June 17, 1942, in Cairo, Egypt. His legal father, Mostafa ElBaradei, was the head of Egypt’s Bar organization. He attended the University of Cairo and graduated with a degree in law in 1962. He graduated from Geneva’s Graduate Institute of Studies with a Master’s in International Law. He earned a ‘Doctor of Juridical Science’ from New York University in 1974.
He, like his father before him, advocated for press and individual freedom of expression as well as democratic rights for the Egyptian people. During his time as IAEA Director General, he advocated for nuclear disarmament and the exclusive use of nuclear energy for peaceful ends. He voiced strong support for diplomatic solutions to nuclear proliferation challenges in nations like North Korea and Iran and noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency had discovered no WMD in Iraq, negating a primary justification for the U.S.-led invasion of that country.
