Oscar D’ Leon Biography

 

Oscar Emilio León Samoza, 11 July 1943, Antímano, Caracas, Venezuela. D’León, a charismatic singer and bass player also known as “El Leon de la Salsa” (The Lion of Salsa), is one of the few contemporary salsa musicians who capitalizes on the strengths of Cuban big band arrangers from the 1940s and 1950s while still maintaining a distinctly modern flavor. D’León is known as “El Leon de la Salsa” (The Lion of Salsa).

He has accumulated an impressive body of work, coming from a country that is not typically associated with producing a world-class Latin artist. He uses Cuban classics and compositions by other prominent Latin composers as a vehicle for imaginative reinterpretations, and he does this using other prominent Latin composers’ compositions.
