Canandaigua, New York is the place where Kristen Carroll Wiig was born on August 22, 1973. Her mother, Laurie J. (Johnston), is an artist, and her father, Jon J. Wiig, is a lake marina manager. Her Norwegian ancestry comes from her maternal grandparents, and she also has Irish, English, and Scottish ancestry. After leaving their previous home in Rochester, New York, the family relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Wiig’s parents separated when she was nine years old, and she moved in with her mother and her elder brother Erik after the split. Wiig continued his education as an art major at the University of Arizona after completing his high school studies at Brighton High School in Rochester. As an elective, she enrolled in her very first acting class, and her instructor quickly suggested that she pursue a career in acting.
